The perfect male body will have the following attributes:

  • Muscle size will be enough to earn the respect of other men
  • Muscle shape will be enough to attract women
  • Muscles will be strong enough to lift heavy weights in the gym up to far above average
  • Muscles will be strong enough to move and suspend your bodyweight to achieve excellent results in the 'real world', whether it be in a sport, the military or an emergency situation.
  • In the process of developing your musculature you will have become healthy through proper diet and exercise that also extends your lifespan into old age without loss of function

Mastering our muscularity and midsection will go a long way to changing how attractive women find our faces. See, regardless of how large our noses are, we want faces shaped by muscle, not bone or fat. This will build up manly jaw muscles and chisel out our faces, making us appear more masculine, which women find sexually irresistible.( study ) Interestingly enough, the more attractive a woman thinks she is, the more drawn to masculine facial features she is. ( study ) It may not just be how attractive she thinks she is, either, and some studies are showing that greater attractiveness and femininity in women results in a stronger preference for men with masculine faces. ( study )

Now, I don’t expect men to start publicly declaring their love for their imperfections and we know we can’t change the media overnight, but as individuals we can each do our part to ensure we aren’t compounding the problem. For instance, we girls could think twice before we post pictures of, say, Rich Froning , and then go on and on about how hot he is, in public, with no regard for our husbands, boyfriends, or male companions. Why is that okay for us to do but not men? And how does it make the everyday guy feel, who works his ass off at the gym but doesn't look like an Adonis? Does he hate himself because he doesn't measure up?

I talked about this a lot in " 10 True Confessions of a Pro Fitness Model ." The only guys who can stay shredded and grow at the same time are genetic freaks and, of course, those supposed "fake natty" lifters everyone loves to call out online. If you want to gain size, get comfortable with a four-pack while you provide your body with more fuel to train harder and grow. I gave up on the dream of having abs all year 'round a long time ago because frankly, I love pizza and wine too much. They're never too far away when I need them, though.

The question as asked seems to be "can I trust a bodybuilder based on their appearance?" I would have to say no - too many athletes have been caught in lies over the decades. This includes unknown amateurs who lied to researchers to get gym time, physicals, etc. It's a serious problem for sport science. That said, you might be pleasantly surprised at what you will accomplish when you try. Remember, you don't really know your genetic potential, or your innate talent for effort. Finally, don't worry about suddenly waking up looking like the Hulk - worry about waking up one day and suddenly realizing that you're 50 pounds overweight with a bad back. The latter seems to be what's happening to most people.
